Field crops, cover crops, and garden seed:

November 10th 2009

Choose one of our complete seed catalogues for further details:

Tom (a) homesteadorganics.ca can help you select the best field or cover crop seed. Jeannette (a) homesteadorganics.ca has some good suggestions for your garden.

We are still early, so the catalogue is subject to change at any time. A more complete version of the seed catalogue will be published in February. Please check our website often for updates.

We offer an early payment discount of 4% on all seed payments received by Dec 25th 2009.

Even if you are not sure about your final choice, or we are not yet sure about final selections, you can still increase their buying power by 4% if you send an early payment by cheque or debit card, but not by credit card. We can then finalize your seed order by spring time when we have full details and you have completed your cropping plans.

In preparing your seed selections, please consult the websites noted on the cover page of the seed catalogue. These are great tools to understand characteristics and relative performance of all the varieties. In the seed catalogue on our website, we have active hyperlinks taking you directly to performance data and technical sheets for almost all the varieties.

When thinking about seed, you are also probably wondering about markets and crop contracts for 2010. It is too early yet to set production contracts; we will start offering contracts in February or March. Suffice to say in the mean time that we still needs lots of the regular crops of soybeans, corn, barley, wheat, peas, and oats. It is hard to go wrong in your crop choices. Your greatest concerns are your soil conditions and your crop rotation requirements.

This fall and going into the winter, we are experiencing some downward price pressure in the organic sector. The global financial turmoil creates spending concerns among consumers which causes stagnation in the demand for organic crops. Secondly, organic production in North America is increasing and there is better balance between supply and demand. Asian organic production is also increasing and they are moving products into our markets.
