Homestead OrganicsWe are now receiving the field crops from the 2009 harvest. Consult our spot and future delivery prices. These change on a monthly basis, so come back often.
We have enough purchase contrats in place to cover our needs this fall and winter. But we will need more supplies in the spring and summer of 2010. Please consult our website often to consider your market opportunities.
Markets and demand for organic grain are still strong. But market growth has halted as consumers react to organic price premiums amidst a global economic crisis. Therefore, there is downward price pressure as supply and demand regain their balance. Although prices are down from the high of last year, they are still strong compared to 2007.
It is still too early to call us about contracting your 2010 crop. We start offering future contacts in February or March. In 2010, we will still need the popular grains: soybeans for food and for feed, corn, barley, oats, peas, and wheat. It is hard to go wrong; stick to your soil conditions and your crop rotation and do not let the market mess up your farm's sustainability. While you are thinking about your 2010 plans, please consult our seed catalogue.
Forward contracts, signed either before or after harvest, come with a fixed price and a fixed payment schedule. Forward contracts are offered for delivery in a specific month on a first-come-first-serve basis. Contracts before harvest are based on fixed acres and the actual harvest. Contracts after harvest are based on the tonnes in your bin.
Secondly, we make spot purchases at a negotiated price to fill gaps in our production volume or to meet new opportunities in our marketing. Farmers may want to decline a forward contract and hold their crop until they are satisfied with the market price, but they run the risk that we may not need their crop when they want to sell.
Please call or write to Tom (a) homesteadorganics.ca to discuss your crop and marketing plan.
