2007 Rotating Mars Globe

Note - the entire globe will take a bit of time to fully load

This rotating globe was made using WinJUPOS, a wonderful program for scientific reduction of planetary images. It was compiled from images made between November 3 and December 27, 2007.

A major problem in obtaining a uniform globe was the variability of the Martian atmosphere during the apparition. This is particularly evident in the polar regions where the cloud patterns changed on a daily basis. In addition, the Martian atmosphere was full of dust prior to opposition (December 24) and the contrast of surface features gradually changed as the dust settled. Notice the dark appearance of Olympus Mons (from a November image) which became a very pale feature during December.

A larger, smoother version may be found here. It will take more than twice as long to fully load.
