During the second half of the 19th Century, Shipping Lines replaced steerage and cabin accommodation with a three-class system. Grosse Île authorities followed suit and constructed hotels, one for each class of passengers. In the foreground is the Second Class hotel while the Third Class hotel stands behind it.
