Some annual summaries of results

Back in 1901, when the very first Christmas Bird Counts were published by the National Audubon Society, New Brunswick was represented. Farmer William H. Moore of Scotch Lake, near Mactaquac, reported a list of 10 species seen near his home on Christmas Day, 1900. New Brunswickers did not follow up well on Moore's pioneering example; for a half century, only a handful of counts were conducted here. Since 1956, however, a growing number of censuses have been carried out each year.

Since the early 1990s, about 45-50 areas have been surveyed each winter. The results are published annually in the N.B. Naturalist / Le Naturaliste du N.-B.  Some also submit their results to Bird Studies Canada and the National Audubon Society.

Each count is conducted within a circle 24-km in diameter on one day during a 3-week period set by the Audubon Society. The 101st and subsequent Christmas Bird Counts will be held during the period from December 14 to January 5.

A lot of Christmas Bird Count data (Canada-USA) is available on the web.

The scheduled dates for New Brunswick counts will gradually appear on the Calendar at Dave's Nature Links during November and December each year. Anyone who wishes to participate for the first time in an established New Brunswick count may contact the local organizer. To start a count in a new area send a message stating the area of interest to: David Christie.

Join the Christmas Bird Count, enjoy some healthy outdoor recreation, and help monitor the numbers of our winter birds.
