A description contained in Cockshutt Farm Implements Catalogue No.391 described the Corn Sheller as follows:
"The ears of corn are fed end first from the feed table into the hopper.  They then pass through a triangular opening formed by the picker and stripper wheels and the rag iron.  The size of this opening can be increased or decreased for larger or smaller ears by adjusting the rag iron tension bolt.  The means that various sized ears are shelled equally clean."

"When the ear of corn has been stripped of the kernels the cob is carried along the cob guide by means of the picker wheel and ejected from and opening.  The shelled corn falls to the bottom of the machine past an air blast from the cleaning fan, which eliminates all chaff and blows it through the opening just below the cob outlet.  This thorough cleaning is particularly desirable when the corn is being shelled for seed, since it prevents plugging of the hopper of the planter with chaff.  The shelled corn passes through an opening in the bottom plate and is collected in any convenient receptacle."
