1940 Cockshutt 60 Rowcrop Tractor
This Cockshutt 60 Row Crop was
purchased
by Sheldon D.'s family shortly after it was produced in 1940.
The tractor, which he obtained from his uncle in August of 2001,
is
in excellent shape and carries with it great memories from his past.
“This is the tractor that I drove as a kid to do the plowing on the ‘homestead’ for many years ….. often with the steel rear wheels.“ A tag on the tractor states that it was built by the Oliver
Farm Equipment
Company, Charles City, Iowa. It was one of four tractors
intended
“For Sale to Canada” that Oliver transported to Champlain Motors, St.
Albin’s, Vermont. Sheldon’s grandmother, Mabel
McClay of Clarenceville,
Quebec, became the original owner. According to the Bill of Sale,
it was purchased for $1500.00. It came on steel wheels with
rubber
tires being added after the war. One tire now has a slight split
in it but all of them still hold air.
The tractor continued to be used on the family homestead until 1976 and has been stored in a shed there since that time. It was covered in grease and dirt which protected the paint on the lower area and the underside ... leaving it unfaded and perfect!!!! In the photo, the '60' is shown on the trailer heading to its new home in Ontario. The rear steel wheels (under the tractor) and the original manual have remained with it. Hoping to find front steel wheels to complete the set, Sheldon is "very honored and pleased" to have this family heirloom! |
