Serial No. BR1006
Owned by Garry & Ken Wood of Barrhead, Alberta ![]() "The
Cockshutt 550 was the last new tractor my Grandpa (James) Wood bought for his
farm. The tractor was purchased new in 1962 from Busby Garage
Ltd. My dad (Garry) was working there at the time in the shop. He was 20 years old
then
Our 550 is a 1962 model built in December of 1961. From 1962 on, the 550 was essentially the main tractor on our farm. It did everything from plowing and cultivating to baling hay with a John Deere 14T square baler. The 550 always sat inside when it wasn’t being used. In 1977 it was sold at my Grandpa’s farm sale. We found it and
bought it back in 2005. Other than being terribly rusty, the tractor was still
in pretty decent shape. It did have a burnt exhaust valve, so we redid the
cylinder head. Other than that there were just the normal wear items to fix up.
![]() My dad sandblasted the tractor, we used
epoxy primer on the chassis. The fenders, hoods and all other sheet metal pieces
were etch primed, then primed with high solids primer 3 times. Then we block
sanded all the primer down to 600 grit. It was then sealed and painted with Nason 2K
Urethane Enamel. After I painted the entire hood, grill and fenders, I
put on 2 coats of
Nason high build urethane clear. CKP Publications in Big Prairie, Ohio,
supplied the decals for both the 30 and the 550. Keith was a great
source of
info for us when we were restoring these two units.
