My Grandpa, James Wood, bought his first new tractor in 1947. It was a Cockshutt 30. I believe he purchased it from the Cockshutt dealer in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He farmed with the 30 as his main tractor until 1962. He traded the 30 off on a new Cockshutt 550 in 1962 and his brother George  Wood purchased it.

Uncle George farmed with the 30 as his main tractor until 1976, when he sold his farm and sold the 30 back to my dad, Garry Wood. By that time the tractor was totally worn out. We used it for a few years, raking hay, crushing grain and mowing hay.

In 1982, Dad totally rebuilt the 30. The engine was completely overhauled, new pistons and sleeves, head rebuilt and the crank re-ground.  Dad purchased another 30 at that time from his cousin as a parts tractor. The rear end and axles were also rebuilt. All of that stuff was pretty much worn out.The tractor was then repainted and was like a new unit once again.

Undergoing a new paint job in 2007From that point on, the 30 lived a pretty easy life. I acquired it from my Dad in 2000. I didn’t really do much with it until December of 2006. At that point, I just decided to give the 30 a complete facelift. When my dad repainted the 30 in 1982, the paint technology and quality was not what it is today. Since the tractor wasn’t rusted, dented or damaged, I elected not to sand blast it. We primed the wheels and chassis with epoxy primer, the tinwork was stripped down, etch primed and given two coats of high build primer. Then we blocked sanded all of the tin and sealed it. I painted the tractor with Nason 2K Urethane Enamel. As it turned out from researching the Cockshutt colors, the red matches to a Toyota Red and the Harvest Gold matches to a Ford Pastel Sand.
