Ancestors of Gary Ian Roberts

Notes

130. Edward Robins

Birth Record for Benoni Benjamin Roberts lists the maiden name of his mother as Robins. The Vital Records Index of the British Isles mixes the spelling as Robins, Robens and Robbins.

132. James Leaver

Much of the Leaver information has been researched from original documents by Sue Smith and her brother, Brynmor Harries who are descended from Robert Leaver and Lucy Willis.

136. James Wates

21.10.1778 m. Ann Wain (see appendix) at North Cray, Lic. Witnesses William Waite and another. 3 Chn. He left the parish of Erith about 1770, married at North Cray and farmed at Hockenden. He died when son James was about 13 years old - later his widow married - - - - - Dawson. Martha Hughes had been told that James was a landed proprietor and Dawson played ducks and drakes with his patrimony. But it is probable that he rented rather than owned farming land. (PTO. Ech. Ap. Her nephew James Wates, carver and gilder, was witness and executor of her Will, which seams to have bean very fairly and carefully planned. Clease, James, Ben., Wm. and Jos. Wates. She left 1 guinea each to eight of bar nieces and nephews for their expenses when they attended her funeral. John Dawson, CA 1801, seems to have had at least 5 children.

137. Ann Wain

Wain(e) is an English name meaning Wagon, Wagoner or Carter. There were not many Wains in Kent, there were more in the north of England, but there were families in Chislehurst from 1740, North Cray from 1758 and Northfleet from 1681, but no suitable Ann Wain traced.

The Chislehurst family had: Lewis Wain 1783 (28) Chislehurst
Lewis Wain 1811 Chislehurst
Lewis Wain 1835 Chislehurst
Lewis William Wain 1836 Chislehurst

But it seems most unlikely that Louis Wain 5.8.186a Leek, Staffordshire - d. 4.7.1939 (78) the cat artist and cartoonist, is any connection.

Possible Ancestors:
26. 3.1677 Mary Wain da. Ed. and Joan, Bp., Woolwich.
25. 9.1681 Edward Wain, m. Dorothy R/Kille at Northfleet, 2nd m?
19. 4.1699 Mgt. Wain, da. of Ric. Wain, Bp. Northfleet.

She said to be very musical. She left a Will remembering her half brother James' children, showing they were in touch at that time. James Wates 1807 was her executor.

a. b. John Dawson, CA 1801, probably had about 5 Chn., though Ted Wates seems to have thought he died without issue. See Elizabeth Shove's will. (A)m. Lucy Ann. Lived High Street. Victualler

28. 1.1823 Anne Dawson, Bur. Queen St. Chapel, Woolwich, age 52 (probably 64).
10.11.1824 John Dawson 1764, bur. Queen St. Chapel Woolwich (60). Her son James Wates 1780 was an active member of Q'S.C. at that time.

If this pedigree is correct, we can trace one line of ancestors to the reign of Henry VIII! The weak links are at the time of The Plague and after the Protectorate. I hope that more information about the Wain family may trace it back to CA 1592 at Sundridge, Ke.

Interesting entries - Wain :-

1802 Thomas Wain was a Freeholder at Charlton, Blackheath, Ke.
1841 James Wain 1791 was a baker, Woolwich.

Interesting entries - Delver :-

6.10.1679 William Delver Bp. Hayes, s. of William. 1721-29 etc. Innkeeper at Hayes.
14. 9.1726 He had twins at Hayes, where an exceptionally large number of twins were born.

The Incumbent of Hayes seems to have bean particularly strict, as the register dates one child was "begotten in adultery" and another " Born in wedlock, but begotten before".

There were 3 prison hulks on the Thames at Woolwich, but in 1848 there were a large number of oases of cholera on one damp, crowded ship, so the survivors from that ship were transferred to the other two ships before the 1851 Census, an unpopular move with the prisoners.

160. James Crowder

James may have built and operated a grist mill since early maps show a mill on Hoople's Creek on James' property.

161. Cornelia Dingman

An exact date of death is not know. It is most likely that Cornelia died during the 'Hungry Year' (1788) when many of the area settlers died of starvation.

166. Sevares Marcellus

Granted land as a Loyalist (member of Royal Regiment of New York) by Order in Council on February 22, 1808.

168. Robert Hutchcroft

Lived in the Howden area of Yorkshire near the River Ouse.

169. Jane Gardham

One source has her birth date as 1771. This birth date is questionable as she would have only been 8 years old at the time of her marriage. The date is more likely about 1761.

188. Barnard Hart

Migrated north from Pennsylvania, as many Loyalist did, and finally settled in the Cornwall area around the time of the American Revolution.

190. Christopher Christian Gallinger

Soldier, Eastern District, Royal Regiment of New York. Muster Roll. P.L. 1786.

200. William Miltimore

New Hampshire State Papers - Revolution Rolls Vol. 3, Page 113 shows a William Miltimer ( it's mentioned that the clerks spelled names how they sounded) on the payroll of Captain James Aikens, Company in the New Hampshire Regiment of Militia commanded by Colonel Thomas Bartlett in service of the US in 1780. He was listed as a private and his time in service was 3 months, 19 days. He was listed as from the town of Londonderry.
William and Janet were Congregationalist and their son, William, graduated from Dartmouth college in 1798 and was ordained a pastor in 1803. (educational reference from: New Hampshire native ministry, pg. 458).

204. John Hartle

Soldier, Eastern District, Royal Regiment of New York, J.F. Muster Roll. P.L. 2nd, 1786.

224. Barrington

This person is assumed at this point to be the son of Thomas and Margery based solely on similarities in information of those assumed to be his siblings (Mark and Nicholas specifically).

252. James Dowsley

James' four sons emigrated from New Ross together in 1820. They all settled in the Brockville area.
