Doug was born and raised in the Ottawa Valley, and as a youngster and teenager learned to square dance and call in the traditional, or Olde Tyme style.
Career brought him to the Lake Simcoe district of central Ontario in 1960. Within a short time he met his wife-to-be, Heather. They were married in 1964. They have two children, a daughter, Corinne, who owns and operates a florist business, and a son, Darin, who is a project leader and designer/developer with an engineering firm.
Doug and Heather started Modern Western Square Dancing in the late 1970's and their children both danced for a few years, as well. The calling bug bit again, and Doug apprenticed under two local callers and also enrolled in a weekly callers' school with the Toronto and District Association.
Doug and Heather started the Maple Hill Squares in 1980. Later they attended another callers' school with Dick Leger, and others with T & D instructors.
A few years ago Doug became the regular caller for the Happy Hoppers Square Dance Club in Newmarket. He is a CALLERLAB member, having attended several conventions, a charter member of the Canadian Western Dance Instructors Association, and holds a SOCAN licence for public performance of recorded music.
Camping and Dancing
Both Doug and Heather have enjoyed camping all their lives. In recent years, they have become regular attendees and callers for several NSDCA (National Square Dance Campers Association) clubs in Southern Ontario, as well as at the Ontario Camporee.
Doug and Heather have attended fourteen of the seventeen National Square Dance Conventions,
and have participated in the programs of most of them.
During the summer of 2010, in the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2014 in Ottawa, ON,
and in 2016, we attended the convention held in Regina, Saskatchewan.
We are looking forward to the next convention in London, ON, during the summer of 2018.
During the summer of 1994, Doug and a fellow camper/dancer arranged a CAMPALONG
to a Halifax Convention, with seventeen camping units, and later, in 1996, hosted a CAMPALONG
of twenty-two trailers and motorhomes on a memorable holiday and dancing trip to the Edmonton National.
Other Hobbies and Interests
Some of Doug's other hobbies include woodworking, amateur radio [VE3VS + VE3CWO], photography, hunting and fishing, gardening, and flying a light aircraft, the Beechcraft Skipper that you see here ( sold aircraft summer of 2015 ). Doug has also completed construction of a second cedar strip canoe ( which is for sale ).
Heather enjoys cooking, knitting and sewing, amateur radio [VE3HQH], gardening and looking after the book-keeping for her daughter's business.
Heather also operates a mail-order business, PROMENADE PATTERNS, offering
the sewing dancer a variety of square dance patterns.
