Our Old News |
Dec. 17, 2007 Can't wait for the holidays. It will be nice to have a break....Our boarding kennel is just about full for Christmas, room for one more. It will be nice to have Christmas at home, no travelling! Joy, Amy, and Sara are all entered in the Feb show in Calgary. It should be a great time seeing friends that we have not seen for months. This will be Sara's first show. She will be competing against her brother and (hopefully) 2 sisters, 1 for sure. It has been a while since a show, we can't wait. I hit a deer the other day with the dodge.....$4900.00 dollars damage + a grill. Hope to have it back before Christmas. The old Olds is not in the best of shape for winter driving but so far so good. The kids and the dogs got their pictures taken the other day with Santa...Amy does not like Santa at all. Maybe this makes John feel a little better, at least Amy would go near him.... I had to slide her close to Santa to get the picture, she was not impressed. Nov. 24, 2007 One more sleep til Grey Cup.... Been a busy month. Nichelle took home Student of the month for October. Jordyn won her classes Remembrance day poem, so she got to recite at the Remembrance Day service in front of everyone. Talon had his first hockey game last night and scored 5 goals and got 1 assist in a losing effort (12-6). Vet day yesterday for the two young girls... Amy is 116 lbs, 32.5 inches (15.75 months} Sara is 47 lbs, and 23 inches. (3.75 months) Oct. 20, 2007 Its been a while since the last post. I'll start with the last weekend in Sept. We went to the Lloydminster show. We camped out beside Mary-Jo and Sabrina. We finally got to meet their Afghan, Azia. Amy had no one to compete against all weekend. Joy had a few of Dr. Shaun Hass's Newfies to go against though. As usual for Joy, she won a point on the last day. It was a fun time. We finished harvest the next day and now we are done most of our fall work. Last weekend we went to Camrose for their annual fall "spooktacular". Amy started the weekend off well getting a point on Friday and placing 2nd in the sweepstakes in her class. She won a nice green ribbon and $9.00 dollars...only cost 10 to enter her. At least she broke her streak of not doing anything the first day. She lost on Sat, still not sure what happened there and had no one to compete against Sunday. Joy had lots of dogs to go against. Friday she came in third, Sat she got reserve, and Sunday she took Winner's Female, getting her 1st 2 point major! She defeated 4 other dogs including her sister (Connie) who had just got her championship the day before. She lost to her brother, Quinn for best of Winners. Joy's breeder Lyn and her friend Jen stayed with us for the weekend. All of Lyn's dogs won points that weekend! It was great to catch up with her. Chantal was also at Camrose and did well with Enya, just no points. Chantal was the one handling Quinn when he got his big win. Great job! We had company over Saturday night and my peanut butter pie went over well. It wasn't quite right not having Mary-jo over for coffee in the morning on Friday ( we were used to her being over for coffee every morning for the last few shows) Saturday was back to normal as she showed up and even had "timmies". Talon spent quite a bit of time with our neighbors, Greg and Lexi's Borzoi's. He anounced, on the way home, he is saving his money for a borzoi. The highlight of the weekend was the spooktacular. The Costume parade. Talon was to dress up as a sheik and we asked Chantal to bring a white sheet. She did much better bringing a real outfit from the middle east that Yves had picked up in his travels. (Thank you, so much!) Lots of pins later, it fit him. A grey t-shirt and a pillow later, Amy was a camel. They did not even make it to the ring and people were taking their pictures. Talon led off the parade to thunderous applause. We were all laughing so hard our stomachs hurt. When the judge came over to them, Amy laid down just like a real camel. The three best entries were brought to the center of the ring where they were judged by the audience and the 3 judges. The louder the applause the better. It was LOUD for Talon and Amy. They ended up winning the youth part, getting "the biggest ribbon ever" according to Talon, and treats and toys. Yesterday we went to Calgary and came home with Sara, a baby wolfhound. We got her from Ann Brockett, the same place we got Amy. Sept 18. 2007 Well, this installment begins about half an hour after I last posted here. Dot finally got out of bed and we decided to go to Edmonton to watch the newfies in the ring. three hours and twenty miutes later we were in the parking grounds of Northlands. We missied Yves and Quinn but got to see Connie. There were some pretty surprised people to see us! We got our puppy fix, finally meeting Raine and Fergus.....both beautiful puppies! It was great to see Nigel, Lyn, Chantal, Yves, Jen and Cindy again. We also got to see Mary-jo, Richard and Beca. We finished harvest (other then 200 acres of flax) friday night. Monday, the kids all started 4-H in Kindersley. Dog handling classes. Nichelle had Joy, Jordyn had Amy, and Talon had Rena, a Norbottenspets. Thanks to Rebecca of RNB for having an extra dog for us and for doing a great job teaching. We also got to meet Glenda, a Vet from Kindersley, ( a good teacher too) . It looks like both Dororthy and myself will be helping with this class too. 12 kids and dogs so far... Sept 8, 2007 Dorothy took Joy to a specialty show in Saskatoon last week. Joy won her class in sweepstakes and came home with lots of prizes and even a little money. She got Best of Opposite in the specialty. Harvest is dragging out with break downs and rain. Hopefully next week is better! The Lloyd show is at the end of the month and Camrose in the middle of Oct. Can't wait! Aug 8, 2007 Just got back from "Canada's Largest Outside Dog Show". It was an awsome weekend for our Amy! Friday, she did not want to show and it was plain to everyone, including the judge...so nothing to report there. Saturday, she did much better getting "Winner's Female" and her first two points under judge Dorothy MacDonald. Sunday had two shows for us. The first show she placed reserve winner. The second show was a specialty for the "Foothills Gazehound club", here she recieved a "Best of Winners" and another 2 points from judge, Richard Beauchamp. Sunday she repeated in the regular show under judge, Denise Jacoby, with another "Best of Winners" (beat all the other wolfhounds that were not champions. So she ended up with a 6 point weekend,,,well on her way to becoming a champion! Joy improved every day. She took Best of Breed every day but couldn't get a group placement. The last day was the best she ever showed, even though it was a very hot day. We had company for the weekend. Mary-Jo and Sabrina Kirk of Mistyglen Irish Wolfhounds. Their motor home broke down just after they left home, so we invited them and the 3 wolfies to stay with us. We learned an immense amount of knowledge and had a good time. Amy's breeder, Ann Brockett of Windseeker Kennels was also in and out lots. It was very nice to spend some time with her too. It was a good weekend for all of us. Saturday night we all joined Sue and Glynn Humphrey's (Hawkhaven), Sharon Crooks and David Bourdon campsite for a potluck supper and a meeting (our first). It was a good time. We also got to spend a day at my brother's new home in Okotoks. The kids went swimming for a day with his family, giving us a much needed break. We ended our trip with a stop in Drumheller, where we all toured the Royal Tyrell Museum and visited Reptile World, where the kids all held "Brittany", a Boa Constrictor. July 31, 2007 It has been a long, hot, and very dry July. We need rain to finish filling the crops. A couple of weeks ago, we went to the lake for the first time in years. It was to hot but the kids loved it. Joy finally got to try out her webbed feet. She was a natural in the water. She left hardly a ripple in the water and could really move out there. Amy, on the other hand, can swim but soaked anyone within 10 feet of her. She looked like the LochNess monster. Tomorrow we finally get some time away. We are off to Calgary to the AKC dog show. We also get to watch Lure coursing....Amy's dad was very good at this! There are 4 shows for Joy and she is the only Newf there. Amy has 3 regular shows and 2 specialties. 11 wolfies are supposed to be there. 1248 dogs registered for the Sunday show, so it should be a full house and the forecast is for rain.....which should make it interesting, being an outside show. We hope to stop in Drum on the way home if the Dodge can handle the hill. Joy's eye seems to be doing pretty good after her accident with Amy's leash. Dot took her to the Unity Vet clinic, where she got some ointment. Unity Vet clinic was recently bought out by a North Battleford vet company. (Dr. Shawn Haas, who raises newfies now works there too.) Now we are not sure where to take our dogs. Provost has always been good to us. Unity is a little closer and seems great too. The vet who checked over Joy actually phoned a few days later to see how she was doing.....that was a first! Janelle will be looking after the dogs boarding here. One more day, working on the "new" Honey Bee"....... July 8, 2007 Not much for news. We finally got our "Prairie Trail Kennel" sign up in our driveway. The boarding part of our business has really gotten busy. We have had 43 different dogs here now, with lots of repeat customers. The Origen brand of dog food is starting to sell more and more too. Congrats to the Seashantie gang.....Shelbie had her first puppy! We now have our " dog room" in place behind the house.....just have to attach it and revamp it. That will be a late fall, winter project. On the 1st of July, we took Amy and Joy to our Canada Day, here in Luseland. Both behaved well and had lots of attention from kids and adults as well. A lady, visiting from Central America, said she had never seen a dog, near that big....so she took lots of pictures. The picture parts of this web site will soon be moved. MSN groups will not allow me enough space to post everything unless we start forking over cash. I think we have found the right place to post them....unlimited amount of space to be used....at myphotoalbum.com. I will have the links up in a few days. June 6, 2007 NACA show is in the books. The last day was good for us. Joy winning best female and reserve in Breed. Amy won best Puppy and reserve Breed. On Friday, Joy's brother, Quinn won Best in Breed and Enya, Chantal and Yves girl, won Best Female. Our friends, Cindy and John's Chinese Crested, Tesa, won Best of Breed all four days and also got a group 3 and a group 1!!! It was great to see someone we knew competing for best in show. It was a long 4 days with the heat well over 30 some days. The trailer was awesome to have on site. Everything went pretty good with it. The AC was nice! Benching with Chantal, Yves, Cindy, John, Zirelda, Nigel, and Lyn was great. Gary from Titan Bear was over to visit too. (He won a Best of Breed with his male too) Lots of stories were shared and I think everyone enjoyed it. I really like the "Once upon a time stories" On Saturday night the Esso refinery, next to the show grounds started on fire.....that was a little exciting, we were packed and ready to roll... Joy's mom, Kate, had 1 puppy yesterday....named Raine.....everyone is doing good.....but Lyn could use more sleep! On the funny side, Amy made the local paper in Unity.......mostly to do with the size of her "heater" Janelle did a great job running the boarding kennel while we were away. Tiny enjoyed his stay with Deb. May 29, 2007 It has been awhile since the last update. We finished seeding a few days ago.... In time to go to the NACA dog show in Edmonton this weekend. Jannelle will be running the boarding kennel for us. We ended up taking Amy to a sighthound specialty in Saskatoon a few weeks ago. (It rained, so I could go) In the 2 showings we got Best Opposite and Best Puppy. No points. We were up against a 16 month old male. Amy was only a few days over 9 months. Funny thing was we got more prizes and rosettes then the male. Last saturday, Nichelle, Talon, and myself took Amy and Joy to Unity for a dog walk for charity. The Unity Lions club hosted this event with the money being donated to train dogs for the disabled. We had a great time other then Amy laying the biggest "heater" I have ever seen right in front of the rink. Talon was wishing his arm was about 2 feet longer then it was as he carried it to the garbage. Little goody bags and bandana's were given to the dogs. The kids got cookies and juice. The Custom Cruiser even made it there and back with no problems....longest trip for it in quite some time. ( 1986 Olds wagon with 325,000kms) Hopefully we make it to Edmonton and back with the truck and trailer, with no problems. Looking forward to seeing our friends again. Will be posting lots of new picks next week. Apr. 16, 2007 Another show under our belts. The Battleford show was the smallest we have ever been at but we had a good time. It was too bad Amy was the only Wolfhound there. She was looking very good and took Best of Breed all three days. She did quite well in group but being up against champions of other breeds, she didn't quite have enough.....In puppy group she showed well too, losing to a older puppy who went on to win best puppy in show. Joy looked pretty good too. She was a little high in the butt. Dot did a good job of showing her and got reserve on saturday. On sunday, I showed Joy for the first time ( Dot gets to show Amy for a day, during seeding, at the sighthound specialty in Saskatoon in a couple weeks). She moved great but did not cooperate when I tried to stack her. She is definatley Dot's little lady. Dot also showed Shawn Haas's Quincy. He beat his brother on the last day. We met up with Tami and Dan Blais, along with their girls. All the kids got along great and spent a lot of time in our trailer, playing and watching movies. We went to the Blais's for supper one evening, which was great! Thanks again. We also got to see Cinna Bear, so we have our "brown newfie" fix for a while. On the funny side......While Dot was showing Joy on saturday (very hot out), Joy gave her head a good shake while passing the spectators, giving the audience a good drool shower. Later the same day, quite a few professional handlers were outside for a break and they were heard to be talking about this big rottweiler chasing and jumping after bubbles that some kids were making. They seemed quite impressed! That was our kids and Tiny. Mar, 30, 2007 The Camrose dog show was last weekend. Joy competed, with no limp! Too bad it was not her weekend, no points. Dot even got to show John and Cindy Harlow's Chinese Crested on the last day. We met up with Chantel and Yves again, which was really nice. Yves has a gift for grooming Newfies, Joy was looking great. ( so was Enya ). We also got to meet up with Mary Jo Kirk again, that is where Amy's mom originated. She showed us how to have Amy plucked for show. She was looking great. Amy pulled off a first, defeating three other dogs in Junior puppy. We were very pleased. Mary Jo kicked our butt in open and rightly so, she has some beautiful dogs! I think she took all the points available for IW's for the weekend. We also got to meet the Rutherfords and the Humpfreys, who both have nice wolfhounds too. So a big thanks to Chantel, Yves, and Mary Jo. Thanks to Cindy and John's comments on me showing Amy, they helped. Our trailer worked great after we worked a few bugs out. Tiny even got to come along for the first time. Talon got his hair "buzzed" off on the grooming table. ( It looks good) This was the first time Dot didn't cut his hair. Talon insisted on Chantel doing it. He was disappointed that he forgot to ask Chantel to talk french to him. Next show is Battleford in a couple weeks. It will be nice to show in Sashatchewan. Mar, 9, 2007 Last week we were off to Border Vet again. Nothing serious. Joy may have a food allergy, so we switched her to Lamb and rice too. (and no more limp) Amy weighs 90lbs at 7 months old and Joy weighs 97lbs at 11 and a half months. Tiny weighs in at between 140 and 150lbs. Amy went with Jordyn and Dot to Brownies, so Jordyn could get her pet badge. Everyone had fun. Jordyn led Amy through everyone and nobody was scared....including Amy. Later Dot took Amy to the local Tavern.....where better to socialize a dog that is timid of men? That went over well too. She even found a couple of bonus fries on the floor. Boarding and grooming of dogs here is going well, even though it is the slow time of the year. We also have our own 5th wheel trailer now, so no more hotels at dog shows! Feb, 14, 2007 A miserable, cold and windy night. The Calgary show has come and gone. Things went good and aweful. Dot took Joy into the ring Friday and was doing great until her last lap. Joy must have slipped and started limping. They were excused. Joy's leg got better just after we got home, So that was four shows and a sweepstakes down the drain. It was Amy's and my first time to go in the ring. It wasn't even too nerve wracking. Friday went good, we won reserve female. Saturday, I think , nerves got the better of Amy, and she ended up with the runs......(not in the ring) and we didn't do anything. Sunday was better for Amy but no placings. We felt better though, when the 2 year old we beat Friday won best in breed. An elder lady at ringside gave me advice before going in on Sunday. I wasn't looking for any....thinking on it after, it was good advice and we had a good laugh. She told me to smile and that I looked too serious. So no points and no money......next month ;-) Our bench was right beside Chantal and Yves. Shawn Haas and Cathy Monteith were beside them. Shawn and Cathy are both vets, which was nice when we were worried about Joy (thank you). There were 37 Newfies entered in the specialty. Since we couldn't show Joy, it was nice to really watch all the competition and specials. Saw a few prospective "husbands" for Joy, in the future.....The people putting on the specialty did a great job! There was a petition going around to get the brown/ bronze color of the Newfoundland reinstated into the standard. After some thought and seeing one (and playing) right up close, we both signed it. CinaBear looks like any other good looking newf other then she is brown. We had fun and really enjoy Chantal and Yves benching beside us. Next show is in Camrose and it sounds like there will be both Newfies and Irish Wolfhounds to compete against.... Jan.4, 2007 We had a nice quiet Christmas, atleast as quiet as can be with 8 dogs here! I think everyone was happy with their gifts. The middle of December had two trips to the vet. Amy had a lump, which is gone now. It was caused by her rabies shot. Joy had an infection around her eyes, again not serious, just needed some antibiotic salve. Amy is easily the tallest out of our three dogs now, and she just 5 months old. Her new favorite pastime is chewing on Joy's ears or anywhere on Joy. Joy doesn't seem to mind usually. Split them up and seconds later Joy goes back for more. We had quite a few people over on the 26th. Amy seems to have overcome her shyness, as she now will go up to people instead of running for her cage. She loves little kids! Instead of knocking them over, she will lay down in front of them and give them big kisses. I think Amy is ready for the ring other then when you stack her, she sometimes likes to lean against you. Joy is in the middle of blowing her coat. Hair everywhere. Looking at her you can hardly notice that it is missing so much. Maybe the judges won't think she is fat. ( The vet said both dogs are a perfect weight for their size.) We are looking forward to the show in Calgary. It will be the first show that Talon won't be going to. (He has a hockey game) Will miss him being there but it will be nice to visit without kids too. Tami and Dan are planning on being there as well as Yves and Chantel. Should be a great time! Have a Newfie banquet to attend, that we are looking forward too. We are hoping Lyn and Nigel are going to make it to but not sure yet. I hope everyone has a happy new year! Dec. 4, 2006 We made it back from Calgary in one piece. A very long weekend with two dogs and three kids. My sister, Lori spent quite a bit of time with the kids, which made things a little easier for us. Chantel and Yves are great people who also have Newfies and were showing too. A huge thank-you to them for all there help! We got to see both Pauline's. Also, we got to see Amy's "mom" Ann, and watched her show Ena, one of her wolfhounds. Ann say's Amy is looking great. The show. Nervous and excited, we expected great things. Not to be. After many discussions, lots of grooming, and who knows what else we finally talked to one of the judges on Sunday morning to see what was the reason we were doing poorly. Joy is a little overweight. Not saying we would have won if she was her perfect weight as we were up against Enya, a young newfie who moved great in the ring. We were to show for the last time, Sunday afternoon. After talking with the judge, we had packed everything up that we could, so we could get away quick after showing Joy. We ended up winning Sunday. Best Puppy, Winners, Best of Opposite, and a First. Now we had to stay to show in group puppy. We didn't win that but had a good time. Finally getting a championship point, we had to get a picture with the judge. Needless to say, it was late by the time we finally got out of Calgary. Both dogs travelled great. By Sunday Amy was not as shy any more either. Joy rode in the back in between Nichelle and Jordyn. Usually sitting, with her head on the back of the front seat. Talon was right in front of that. When Joy got a little warm Talon got some free " hair gel". Didn't bother him..... Thanks again to Chantel and Yves for everything and for being so supportive. We all won points this weekend. Special thanks to Jannelle for keeping our kennel open while we were gone! Nov. 16, 2006 Happy birthday to my sister! We have some big news! As some of you know, we have been looking to get another female newf. Thanks to Lyn, we are super fussy, and just couldn't find the right one for us. So we will wait for another puppy from Kate. Yesterday started as usual, surfing the net, checking BPO, and looking at newfs. Dot had spotted an add in the Western Producer a few days before, so we decided to give them a call just to see what this one was like and all the details. This lady talked like we do, same kind of attitude and the whole bit. This was to good to be true. We got off the phone at 11 am. We were on the road to Calgary just before 2. A few stops in Calgary and then off to "Windseekers" I think it was about 8 our time when we got there. We found ourselves a wonderful pup with awesome temperment. This couple is great and it was very obvious that they love their dogs. Needless to say we got ourselves a new puppy named Amy! It was a long trip home, that included Amy puking in Dot's purse. (At least it was on her this time) We got to bed at 6am. No sleep for me as I had drank a gallon of coffee. So, my spelling is probably real bad today. Amy is Black and Brindle, 15 weeks old and weighs 53 lbs. Pics will be on the pic page soon. We love our Irish Wolfhound! Nov. 1, 2006 Halloween has come and gone. There are new pics on the pic page of our " Giant Skunk" . Joy enjoyed trick or treating. She also enjoyed the ride in our Custom Cruiser. With the back seat down the whole back was open for her and Talon. She would whine when she had to wait in the car instead of visiting people. The weather was miserable for the kids but Joy loved it. The kids will have candy for a long time. We have decided to hit the December Calgary show......with all of the kids....early Christmas for them. Not sure what that means for Dot and me... It is a good thing my sister lives in Calgary, she loves playing with them and I'm sure she will have a few plans fo them. Hopefully we will get to see the Pauline(s) again. Oct. 20, 2006 It has been a busy week. Dot was working (getting up at 5am) and I have been cleaning and hauling grain. Thus the late posting here. We left home Thursday evening, off to Camrose to set up for the next day. When we got there the main building was full so we got to go to building B. We were the second exhibitor there. Nothing was reserved, so we got to pick a great spot. The down side was that the whole building smelled like cow manure. Dot and Talon didn't like that too much but I figured that was better then smelling like Doggy Doo-doo. Once we were set up we were off to Edmonton to stay at my brother, Brian's. Nic and the twins were already in bed and Brian was on a job. Joy was supposed to sleep in her crate, in the garage but a neighbor's dog wouldn't quit barking and Joy decided to respond. She very seldom barks. It worked to her advantage. Brought her in but she had to come down stairs. The most steps she had ever seen was 4. Here there were alot more and no carpet, slippery ceramic.....She would not go down them for about 5 minutes and then, all of the sudden, she decided to try them. She inched her way to the landing and looked up at me as if to say that wasn't so bad. The rest were no problem. Brian got home sometime around 3:30 am. We were up just before 6. Nic, Logan and Nicholas were all up already. We got to talk with Nic and the kids for about 15 minutes before they were off to daycare and work. Never did get to talk to Brian in person. We had a little extra time, so we decided to go to our wholesaler, who supplies us with Acana dog food (other end of the city). I have never had a problem reading a map. We now know that Dot does. We missed our main corner (how we missed the #2 I'll never know). We needed "Lyn" directions. We finally get there only to find out they had shipped everything we had ordered. Back to Camrose, worried we would be late (didn't get lost). Of course Dot was nervous again but Joy seemed fine. We were entered in Puppy Sweeps. Didn't place. Now we were starting to worry a little. Was something wrong with Joy that only a judge could see? A couple hours later we were in the ring again. She wins first in jr. puppy but she was the only one there. Next it was the open female. Joy was awarded reserve winner, placing second to a 4 year old and beating an 11 month old. We were happy! She beat another Newfie for the first time. In the ring again, for best puppy....against an 11 month old male. We won again. A nice present for Joy's 7 month birthday. In Group puppy she didn't win. It was a great day. We met up with Pauline Baldwin again. She was very helpful, making sure Dot was in the right place at the right time and giving lots of encouragement. She is awesome. A pic of her and her 11 year old newfie will soon be on the site under Our Dogs + Friends. This 11 year old has both Canadian and American Conformation championships, Water Trial and Obedience championships. To me, she still looks quite chipper! We also met another wonderful person, Pauline Turnbull, who has the 4 year old Newf that beat us (Tess). She's a great person too. She's the one who finally got Joy's wave under control. It wasn't a big issue this weekend as her top line was very near straight. My pic of Pauline and Tess didn't turnout, but I have the one of her and Dot grooming. Joy didn't do as well the rest of the weekend but did get 2 ribbons a day. I think Joy's highlight of the weekend was Sunday morning. Her breeders came to watch her. Lyn and Nigel were probably 100 feet or more away from her when she picked them out. Usually extremely calm at the shows, Joy was bouncing everywhere. She has a good memory. Needless to say, she was overjoyed to see them. Lyn and Nigel brought Quinn along, Joy's brother. He is looking good, long and lean, and lots of puppy hair yet. It meant a lot to us for them to come and watch. They are the first people to come out of there way to come watch us. Thank you! I wanted to get some pics of them and Joy but totally forgot to take them..... Talon got to show in the ring for the first time on Sunday (with help from Dot). There was a halloween costume parade. They were both dressed up as Ninja Turtles. They didn't win but Talon was happy as he got a bag of candy. We will not be showing in Red Deer,, Calgary, December show, we are not sure. Calgary February show, a newf specialty, we will be there. Stay tuned for Joy's Halloween costume,,,,, Oct. 2, 2006 We made it back from the show in Lloyd. The weekend started at 4:30am, Friday morning. Plan was to be leaving the yard by 6. Of course, that didn't happen.....Dropped Tiny off and sped all the way only to find out later that we were more organized then we thought we were. We had lots of time to set up and get Joy ready. For all the running around, Joy was very content. Dot was kind of frazzled and extremley nervous. Ring time came and thankfully Dr. Haas was there to help Dot and Joy to know when it was their turn. They would have made it on there own but it was great to have a friendly face helping out and answering a million questions. First up for them was the Junior Puppy Class. Joy was the only one entered but you still have to do all the walking around and posing. We were worried how she would react to being in the ring and the judge doing the "hands on" check over. Joy hates it when you check her bite and always fights you. The judge grabbed her mouth, opened up her mouth and Joy never moved. She trotted around the ring like a pro.....well not quite but we were very pleased. She got her 1st blue ribbon. Next she was moved to the (Ithink) open class. Here she got reserve winner, coming in second. Again she did great and basically ignored everyone and everydog, except Dot and the judge. A little later she was awarded Best Puppy of Breed. (She was the only one) Now she had to go for best puppy in group but we had a little break. Dot said everything was a blur. She even had to ask if she turned right....she did...Dot did great! We didn't place in group and were not expecting too. All in all, we ended up with 8 ribbons. A little about the different people at the show.... This being our 1st show, we were amazed at the amount of help and advice from other exhibitors. I never expected this. Debbi Renwick, from Kindersley, was set up, (or benched) near us. Dot was having some trouble getting some of Joy's wavy hair to go in the right place. Debbi asked if we needed a little help and Dot said please. Next thing you know Debbi is showing Dot how to do this and that and helping get Joy looking her best. Thank you Debbi. Your dogs are great and Talon really enjoyed giving them treats. Another couple that really stood out in our minds were the Kirks, from Newbrook, AB. Shame on me, I can't remember his name,,,and Mary-Jo. Talon and myself wanted to see the Irish Wolfhounds. We found them half way across the building, penned up with a sign "Mistyglen Irish Wolfhounds" We talked for a bit and asked if Talon could get his picture taken with "Creena". No problem. A few minutes later all three of us were back with the camera and he took her out. A beautiful dog. Talon was a little hesitant because of her size but it didn't take long for him to warm up. The pics will be posted under "Our Dogs and Freinds". If you want to see "grace in motion", you must watch their dogs in the ring! Later he was over and I was telling him about our troubles with Joys wave and how nervous Dot was. He said he would be back in a minute and he was, with Mary-Jo. As busy as these two were, showing the two dogs they brought, helping other people show, and grooming.....Mary-Jo still gave us advice and even offered to help show. We were amazed at their generosity. A huge thank you to these people. Thank you to Pauline Baldwin, Cathy Monteith, Dr. Shaun Haas, Ingrid Winkler, Y. Defosses, and Chantel Belle-Isle( not sure on that name but she's the one with Newfies and Chinese Crested Dogs * there is a combo* ) There were many more people that looked, helped, had advice, and encouragement. Thanks to all.....I'm awful with names We were not the only people that were there for their first show. Tami and Dan Blais, along with their two daughters, Keltye, and Jacynthe. And, of course, Lyndee, a Golden Retriever. They set up their kennel beside us on Saturday and then we got to watch someone else show in the ring for the first time. They both did great. I was going to post some pictures but the pics we took are all too dark, sorry. We can't wait to see them in Camrose and they want us to show in Red Deer too.....Not sure on that yet, we will see after Camrose. We also posted a pic of Talon and a German Shepherd, he says he loves them too.....might have something to do with our neighbor, "John Deere" Dave's Shepherd. Another amazing thing .... Talon was well behaved ......it was a long weekend for him. He also wants to show now too. The "wave" in Joy's hair is nice but her last growth spurt left her back end high, so we were trying to calm the wave to make her look better..... This was the first time we did not except dogs for boarding on the weekend. We had to turn down six guests. Sorry for any inconveniences. Sept 19,2006 Another new web page editor, hope this one works. Dot has been taking Joy to obedience school once a week. We are trying to get her ready for her 1'st conformation competition. Dot's 1'st one too and she is, by far, way more nervous than Joy. They are off to Lloydminster Alberta, Sept. 29, 30, and Oct. 1. We are not worried how she will place, just need to get some in-ring experience! Joy weighed 82 lbs. on her 6 month birthday (sept 13), along way from the 18 lbs. when we got her. Tiny is finally starting to fill out, his chest is getting big! |
