Callsign List
01 Sept 98
The following is a copy of an e-mail sent to all members by the assistant CFARS Manager.
Hello all members;
Let me first apologize for being so long in sending out an update but it has been an extremely busy summer. The following is a list of what's been going on:
1. We now have a new CFARS Manager. Les Lindstrom (VE3KFS) has taken over the reigns of leadership from Bob Schofield. Bob has left us for a 3 year trip to the United States and he felt he would not be able to continue to fully serve the membership and requested Les to take over. Welcome aboard Les!
2. The weekly nets continue to be run by CIW622 on "Juliet" every Sunday and Wednesday evenings at 2200Z. Thus far, only 12 members have checked into the net. We would like to see this number grow so please try to join us from time to time. The net has also been expanded to include frequency "Alpha". At the conclusion of the net on "Juliet" the net control station will go to "Alpha" and pick up any stations that could not be heard on "Juliet".
3. I'm working on realigning all the ship call signs to include all the new ships. We are also updating any call signs of ships that need to be changed due to their moving from one coast to the other. A new list will be sent via e-mail when it is approved.
4. The call sign CIW8122 has been issued to the HMCS Anticosti. They expressed a desire to conduct phone patches during an upcoming deployment. We request that all members monitor CFARS frequencies on occasion to check for activity.
5. CIW8105 (HMCS ST John's) has been noted on "Juliet" conducting phone patches over the last week. They have no set schedule but have been on after 0001Z. Lets get out there and show them that we can get them in touch with their loved ones.
6. We are continuing to try and contact as many members that we can to bring them up to date. Thus far we have only been in touch with 32 members of 99 listed. If you know (or are in contact with) any CFARS members please ask them to contact me so we can get them on our mailing list.
Well that's about it for now folks. Please continue to check our web page for updates and news. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or suggestions.

Bob Schofield has returned from the great white north (Eureka, NWT) and has taken over the reigns of CFARS again. However, on a sad note Bob will be leaving us again later this summer. He will be moving to the United States and will be unable to continue as CFARS Manager. His replacement will be named here on this site as soon as we confirm who the new CFARS manager will be. I'd like to thank Bob for all his great work in rebuilding CFARS and we look forward to his return to Canada. BZ Bob, you will be missed.
In other news, Len has been continuing to act as net control on Wednesday and Sunday nights. To date however, not many people have checked in. Each night it's the same people. If you're a member we would love to have your presence on the net.
VEV9 has been reactivated! We have been in contact with personnel at VEV9 and it has been announced that the station is once again active. We hope to hear them soon. VEV9 was reactived with he intention of doing upcoming phone traffic for CIR, unfortunately the guys deployed with CIR have decided that they have no need for phone patches but stay tuned, there is another group going to the same area later this summer that may want patches. Keep checking back here for more information or e-mail us direct for more detailed information.
The CFARS staff
are in the process of realigning the ship callsigns. There has
been some contact with various ships and there has been interest
from a few ships to use phone patches. Once the callsign list is
revised a copy will be e-mailed to all members.

Our CFARS
Manager has left us for the summer to spend some
"vacation" time in the Arctic. He should be back by
late July, in the meantime, Scott Crouse will assume the role of
acting CFARS Manager until his return. Please send all
correspondence to him.

CHANGE TO CFARS NET CHECK-IN TIMES

Wed and Sun evenings. The times will be:
1800(local - Ottawa time) or 2200Z and
2000(local - Ottawa time) or
0000Z.

In a letter to CFARS members, CFARS Manager announces the activation of a CFARS net;
Len Brewster, VA3LEN, will be acting as the NCS until such time as an alternate location(s) can be established. He will be operating on a time available bases as follows:
a. at least twice a week;
b. Wednesday and Sunday evenings (initially);
c. JULIET frequency;
d. at 0000Z until Apr 5th and then 0100Z, starting Apr 6th (or 2000 local Ottawa time) ;
If any others members would
like to assume control of the CFARS on alternate dates and times
you can arrange this through Len during his regular schedule.
